I could feel that train's energy. Deep vibrations and the rhythmic sounds of speed were energizing me. That day had been promising. Happy and full of creative energy, that’s how I felt. And I was exploring the Polaroid SX-70 with a Sonar autofocus. I had bought it in NYC. It was an exciting new media. And I just wanted to experiment with it. That August 1980 night train to Porto energy, was contagious.

My personal artistic explosion erupted in 1965-66. One day I went out to buy art supplies and started painting. Without any formal training or tutoring I would paint oils, acrylics, do collages and mixed media, in one word: experiment. Some of my works were diptychs and triptychs. I was fascinated and inspired by the works of Hartung, Soulages, Kline, Aletchinsky, Pollock …, and the high energy and unfamiliar beauty they revealed.

1976/79’s “Photo Impressions” is a body of work, where I experimented with human energy, through long exposures. The instant photography process of the polaroid film, allowed me to move fast and not derail through that new trial and error process.

Writing this small text helped me to understand how everything in our backgrounds combines and comes together to create new synthesis. At least thats how I “see” it!
